Vörös-kő lookout

The ReVörös-kő lookout, a lookout tower with beautiful panoramic views, renovated in 2005.

781 m high Vörös-kő (Red Stone) hill, which can be reached by following the yellow lane sign from Mátraszentimre cemetery.

Or from the playground in the lower part of Kossuth Lajos Street, Mátraszentlászló, on the yellow lane.

Named after the nearby red-coloured stone.

Ágasvár

Medium hike, about 5 km.

The castle, built after the Tartar invasion, was probably destroyed during the Turkish occupation.

Only the name of the castle survives today. From the 789 m high peak, there is a beautiful view to the north of Bátonyterenye, the Maconkai reservoir and the Karancs-Medves.

In clear weather, you can even see as far as the High Tatras.

The tourist chalet below the peak preserves the romantic atmosphere of the mountain lodges. Here you can take a break and have a bite to eat in the buffet of the tourist house before reaching the summit of Ágasvár on the very intensively climbing blue ∆ sign. Open only on weekends.

On the way you will find Newton's Rock, Donkey's Rock, Turkish Footprint, Rattling Gorge, Rattling Brook.

Galya-lookout - Kékes-tető

Difficult hike, 28 km.

Starting from the blue sign, passing by the Piszkés- roof, you will soon arrive at the Galya-lookout.

At 960 metres, the lookout tower not only offers breathtaking panoramic views, but also cosy bivouac shelters on its top three floors, sheltered from wind and rain.

After 22 km, climbing up the steep ski slope, you arrive at the highest point in the country, Kékes-tető.

Animal Park-Mátraszentimre

The small zoo in Mátraszentimre is an easy walk from the end of Eötvös József Street.

You can meet domesticated pets such as goats, donkeys and other native species.

Nearby on the hillside you can find a lookout.

Ilona Valley Nature Trail

The trail along the Ilona stream, starting from Parádfürdő, shows the geological values of the Eastern Matra and the former ore mining.

The 6.5 km long trail can easily be done with a baby buggy, weather permitting.

Stations mark the Etelka ditch, opened by Baron Orczy in 1780, the Timsós quarry, the St Stephen's well, the Devil's dams and the Ilona Valley waterfall, which falls down an 8-10 m high cliff face.

Harkály House

A new, state-of-the-art visitor and education centre has been created in Mátrafüred.

An interactive exhibition on the wildlife of the Mátra, The Harkály House is connected to a trail leading to Sás-lake, which can be visited independently or with a guided tour at a prearranged time.

Gyöngyös-Mátra Museum

The Mátra Museum is currently housed in the Orczy Castle, where exhibitions on local history, hunting history and paleontology are held.

The only preserved mammoth skeleton in its entirety in Hungary can be seen here. "Bruno" was found in 1949 in Mátraderecske.

Natural history exhibition in the pavilion presents the flora and fauna of the Mátra, but also, for example, live tropical animals and plants can be seen in the palm house.

Near Gyöngyösoroszi there is a private collection of almost 4000 minerals, unique in Hungary.

Interactive games, thematic exhibitions, mining and geological relics await visitors.

Observatory

The Piskéstető Observatory is the largest and best equipped observatory in Hungary.

Six times a week, at set times, astronomers guide visitors through the observatory, presenting their activities and results, the three telescopes currently in operation and the beautiful wooded area.

Three village church

Upper Mátra had no church until the late 1930s.

Church of three village Upper Matra did not have a church until the end of the 1930s. According to legend, a civil conflict broke out between the three villages concerned (Ötházhuta, Felsőhuta and Fiskalitáshuta), the villagers could not agree on which village to build their common church in, so the building was erected in the geometric centre of the three villages.

The ski park in Mátra Szentistván also offers a sensational panorama to the north, and in winter, the snow-capped peaks of the High Tatras offer an unrivalled experience in the sparkling sunshine.
